Sharon + Anthony met at the bus stop in Grade 10 and if it was love at first sight, it definitely wasn’t because of Sharon’s shoes – Anthony made fun of them!  When their respective groups of friends began to hang out together they became friends.   Sharon swore she wouldn’t fall for a lady’s man like Anthony, but, after a sunset proposal in Hawaii, they’re now marrying.  Seriously, Anthony had planned an engagement so perfect it beats a Hollywood romance.  For their engagement shoot, we accompanied these two transplanted Calgarians around their new hometown, Vancouver.  For us, aside from the obvious name twins, we had so much in common with Sharon + Anthony it was a day spent with great friends.

Anthony is part-owner of Raw Canvas; part pub, part art studio.  We are definitely stopping in our next trip to Vancouver as Rina didn’t have a chance to pick up a paint brush this time around.  Share a bottle of wine and get creative with friends by purchasing a canvas and painting.  Sharon + Anthony’s major artistic tip?  Start with a plan.  They self-criticised that the painting was their worst collaborative effort to date and, now that it’s online, Sharon’s afraid our mutual friend Sam who did art with her in high school, will make fun of her.

The fire alarm went off at the restaurant next door to Raw Canvas but, being  optimistic, we opted to continue with the shoot.  After all, firefighters had arrived to save us if necessary :).  Anthony was hungry so we stopped off for a bite of lunch at Japa Dog’s new restaurant in Yale Town.  We first heard about Yale Town years ago and it’s become a Vancouver tradition for us as well as a few celebrities.  Usually it’s a matter of finding the street vendor on the right corner and finding a bench or something to sit on so we’re excited about a restaurant and Japa Dog with fries! It was great to run into Philana + Gary as well.  After lunch and a wardrobe change, we hit the late afternoon light in Gas Town.  Unfortunately, the lighting was ideal but the temperature wasn’t.  Sharon’s joined our amazing brides by braving pain for the sake of art and beauty.  Sorry about your cold toes!

There’s something about Vancouver and our desire for cherry blossom backdrops that seems to result in near brushes with the law.  We escaped campus police with Michelle + Terry and fortunately escaped speed cameras with Sharon + Anthony.  We drove like mad to get to Stanley Park in time for the sunset amidst cherry blossom paths and looking onto Vancouver’s cityscape.

Sharon +Anthony, it was awesome spending the day with you and hearing your stories.  You two were brilliant at braving the spring chill and you rocked every pose.  We can’t wait to shoot your big day in Vancouver!  It was great to meet fellow foodies.  We’re rather proud of the food babies we came home with!  We’re definitely looking forward to more all you can eat sushi when we’re next in town.

  • Karen + Solomon :: Jet Set E-Session (Alberta, Canada)

We are so incredibly honoured & just wowed that Karen + Solomon, who live in Hong Kong, flew all the way over the Pacific to shoot their engagement photos with us.  As they were entrusting us with not only their engagement images, but also capturing Karen’s first Canadian holiday, we scouted not just locations, but also activities and our favourite food finds to share our Alberta lifestyle with Karen + Solomon over a 2-day e-session.  It was fantastic to meet them in-person a few days before we started shooting as emails and Skype just aren’t the same and having a face-to-face chat helped inspire us to do an Autumn in Alberta themed photo shoot.

For Karen + Solomon the green spaces and fresh air were a welcome change from Hong Kong’s concrete landscape.  We spent an afternoon with them in the park feeding Canadian geese, running and playing in the crisp autumn leaves and introducing Karen to our favourite cupcake shop in Calgary, Crave.  She loves the colour blue (so Solomon got the pink one!) and Solomon only found out they were having a wedding cake (blue of course) when she told us about it :)  Solomon told us that she doesn’t eat much in Hong Kong but has been loving Canadian food so much she drives to Pete’s Drive-In after dinner for a milkshake!  Ah ha ha, we think that’s so cute 🙂

We love Alberta sunsets and couldn’t wait to share one with Karen + Solomon.  We combined a sunset with a rural setting and took them to a wheat field, all we were missing was a cow in the background 😉 because that would have been legend… wait for it… I hope you’re not lactose intolerant… dairy.

Of course, we had to include a trip to the Rockies!  Karen + Solomon’s countryside hikes with their Welsh Corgi in Hong Kong meant they were prepared for hiking around Lake Minnewanka and Lake Louise, where we even spotted some deer off the trail.

We had such a blast hanging out with Karen + Solomon. It was awesome hearing your stories about Hong Kong and the lifestyle over there. And we enjoyed sharing our stories here in Canada.  Of course they love the Canadian lifestyle;  American TV, movies and clothing at Abercrombie & Fitch.  And for those in North America who are reading this blog… what is hot in HK culture… they love Korean fashion now.  :O)

Thank you for all your hard work and we can’t wait to go to HK and visit the lifestyle and feast our faces over there.  We can’t wait!!! We are very honoured that you guys came all the way to do your photos with us here in Canada and now we have made friendships out of this. Congrats on your big wedding day in December and have fun with your friends in Phuket afterwards.  Sooo lucky! :O)

    Love ya!

We’re so excited about this month’s Rangefinder magazine & yes it’s a complete bias because there’s an article about us in it!  We were incredibly honoured to receive 3rd place for our Pursuit album and hope the article, which talks about the inspiration and behind-the-scenes info, helps to inspire other photographers to create something just a little bit different.  You can read the PDF article here, or read it online.

Lisa + Ken – thank YOU for being such amazing models, we couldn’t have done this without you!

Pursuit is part 1 of a 2-part engagement series, you can view both engagement shoots here:
