The Gharoli ceremony, where Sam’s future sister-in-law and other female relatives fill a pitcher with water and bathe the room, caught Anton off guard.  A serious shake up from other weddings Infused Studios’ has captured, this getting ready involved photographing a half naked groom in a tub surrounded by female relatives!  After the bathing ceremony, Sam’s sisters tied a sehera (floral veil) to his forehead and adorned him with a garland made from paper currency.  Properly attired, they proceeded to the Temple for the Milni.

Edmonton Wedding PhotographyIn Sikh wedding tradition, the groom getting ready is a more ornate occassion than the bride.  Meezy’s morning was  one of bonding as she chatted with her future sister-in-law, Aman.  Sonia did an incredible job with Meezy’s make up but it wasn’t hard to make the glowing bride absolutely stunning.  The rich magenta of Meezy’s sari and her ornate jewelery couldn’t outshine her smiles.  Meezy joked about how goofy Sam was and how he would have ridden to the Temple on a horse if she hadn’t stopped him.

Edmonton Wedding PhotographyAfter the ceremony, family pictures were done outside.  As part of tradition, the girls try to get the groom to take off his shoes and, cunningly, the girls decided that Rina would be an ideal accomplice.  Sam, who had seen this happen at friends’ weddings, should have known better but a combination of being tired from the ceremony & Rina’s innocent request to take a nice picture of his shoes got the best of him.  No sooner were the shoes off than in Meezy’s hands and being thrown into the air before her girlfriends got them.  15 minutes and several family portraits later, Sam was a Cinderella no more and reunited with his shoes.
Calgary Wedding PhotographerMuch like a Chinese door game, Sikh tradition also barrs the groom’s entrance into the bride’s parental home.  Meezy’s sisters barred the doorway, demanding a $10,000 entrance fee.  Both sides of the family had something up their sleeves though and a battle of silly string vs. water guns soon ensued.  To protect the girls and the house, an umbrella was used to shield some of the water gun attack.

Calgary Wedding PhotographyThe Vidaai (or Doli) ceremony marked the end of the celebration.  This is the bride’s official departure from her parental home and first steps into her new life as a married woman.  Meezy was adamant she wouldn’t cry, but when she saw her eldest brother, Gurb, with tears in his eyes, the waterworks began.  It seemed her entire family was equally touched by seeing her off to start a new life as a married woman.

From Meezy’s parental home to her new home, where new demands must be met!  Inflation seemed to hit the entrance fee as by the time they got to Sam’s house, there was a 50% increase in price!  After bribing his way past his sisters and surviving a silly string attack (what can we say, karma!), Sam and his bride were welcomed by his mum, who gave her blessing for Meezy to join her family.

“But now I know just who you are
And I know you hold my heart
Finally this is where I belong
It is you I have loved all along”

~ It Is You (I haved loved) by Dana Glover

The Oasis conference centre was transformed into a glamorous and personal enchanted forest that Steph + Ryan had created for their family and friends.  The ambiance evoked a sense of love, thought, happiness and magic.  The ice sculpture added to the elegance and had pride of place, greeting guests as they entered the reception.

The table numbers (all 30 of them!) marked the signifcant places in the couple’s relationship; from first sighting to honeymoon locale.  All of the details, from decor to favours were handcrafted with love by Steph + Ryan.

The MC’s did a fantastic job of keeping everyone entertained and the festivities going.  The wedding games were designed to create embarassing moments and get the couple to kiss.  As Ryan is such a joker, it was pay back time and as his wife, Steph was swept along for the ride.  The giant dice had 6 tasks and ‘sword play’ was rolled – we’ve never seen such fierce looking tongues!  There was also wrist to lips where Ryan looked rather chivalrous completing that task.  The helium game was designed to test Steph’s ability to tell Ryan apart from the other chimpunks and his laugh set him easily apart.  The pretzel game involved both sets of parents as well as the newlywed’s, who ended up not with the shortest end but crumbs.

Maid of Honour Ashley toasted her older sister, recounting childhood memories of looking up to Steph and aspiring to be like her. Her recollections of adventures and sharing memories with Steph brought tears to the bride’s eyes.  Welcoming Ryan into the family, Ashley considered him not just her sister’s ideal match, but also the older brother she never had.

Best Man James toasted his best friend who is a 3 year old trapped in a man’s body, recounting how Ryan’s infectious enthusiasm and phrases such as “That’s soooooo AWESOME,”  “Are you SERIOUS?” amd “OH REALLY” were often duplicated and never replicated.

Stephanie + Ryan by Infused Studios, Edmonton Wedding PhotographersStephanie + Ryan by Infused Studios, Edmonton Wedding PhotographersBoth bride and groom’s parents gave a speech.  Ryan’s parents spoke about how they complement one another from personality (Ryan is an extrovert, Steph an introvert) to names (Ryan means little prince, Stephanie means wisdom).  Steph’s parents noted what a true gentleman their new son-in-law was, 6 years ago Ryan went around to ask their permission to date their daughter.

The newlyweds thanked everyone who had helped them out to create their special day, giving a big thanks to their families.   Ryan’s eyes teared up as he spoke about his parents and Auntie Paula.  Steph spoke about how she would still be doing video game slumber parties with her brothers and girly movie nights with her sister even though she’s a married woman.

After dinner the dancing shoes went on and Steph + Ryan, who used to dance for the UofA dance club had everyone on their feet ready to celebrate!  We reckon it’s Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ (or a cat?!) that inspired the moment, but as Ryan puts it  “I have absolutely NO idea what I was thinking.. lolz…”  Maybe it was just sheer happiness?

Stephanie + Ryan by Infused Studios, Edmonton Wedding Photographers

The couple’s choreographed dance was done to a medley of tunes; It is you (that I have loved), Bittersweet Faith and an instrumental version of Jai Ho.  During Jai Ho, everyone who had gathered alongside the dance floor to watch joined Steph + Ryan in a scene reminscient of a Bollywood film.  Even their parents were on the dance floor, mimicking the fab choreography by Wilson + Connie.

Thank you Steph + Ryan for sharing your beautiful day with us – it was an inspiring vision to be a part of and we are honoured to have been a witness to this chapter of your love story.  You two pose like supermodels and have some of the biggest hearts we’ve met and to us, you’re super stars!  We’ve made some great friends in documenting your love story.  We love that you’re both big kids with loving personalities & we can’t wait to meet the football team of kids Ryan mentioned you’ll be having  during the tea ceremony.

Have a blast in your honeymoon in Mexico and Disneyland  (the happiest place on earth!) .

    Kids at heart too,

  • Stephanie and Ryan :: Treasury (Edmonton, AB) Part II of III

The Treasury was the perfect locale for a quick creative session with Steph + Ryan.  Big thanks to our good friend Sam Tu for arranging an exclusive all access pass for us (it was so all access Ryan even checked out the girls washroom after discovering a TV in the gents!).  Ryan was GQ meets diva while Steph was simply effervescent.

Stephanie + Ryan by Infused Studios, Edmonton Wedding PhotographersThe weather was perfect for an outdoor shoot so we brought some class to an urban parkade; the girls didn’t catch a chill in their strapless dresses & the guys didn’t bake in their waistcoats & suits – although the lack of wind meant that we took turns being the wind machine.  Rina was often just out of frame after having thrown the veil up to catch some air, Ryan got into it as well & threw the veil with such force it came off Steph’s head!

The bridesmaids were walking the parkade like a runway, showing off their damask dresses and feathered shoes.  Steph loved her pink shoes and was delighted to shoe model whenever required.  We loved how the shoes matched the bouquet perfectly!  Their smiles were genuine laughs as the guys kept them thoroughly entertained with their antics!

Ryan showed off his Jim Carrey abilities in changing his facial expressions from one expressive moment to the next, especially when it came to the groomsmen putting Ryan in his place after looking uber cool & sophisticated at The Treasury.

  • Stephanie and Ryan :: I Did it My Way (Edmonton, AB) Part I of III

    Words by Maureen Young

Stephanie + Ryan by Infused Studios, Edmonton Wedding Photographers

We are absolutely, jaw-droppingly impressed with Steph + Ryan.  We heard about the 2 years of planning during their e-session and how they’d worked out all the details a wedding planner is usually responsible for; from the wedding stationary to flowers and decor.  But we were still blown away by how these two had created such  a gorgeous and incredibly personal wedding.  We’re hoping couples will be inspired by this wedding and add their own DIY touches like Steph + Ryan.

The night before the wedding all hands were on deck to help finish the decoration of the church and reception venue.  Steph + Ryan, who is a big fan of HGTV, designed the wedding themselves from concept through to execution and we were blown away by how beautiful everything was.  We’ve brought disco lights to the dance floor before but this was the first time we’ve helped to sort out ceremony lighting, amazing how the eye is trained for these things!  Thanks to Binn and Herman for helping us perfect the lighting!  Our motivation (other than adoration of Steph and Ryan!) was having chinese food brought to the church and dreaming of the cake Ryan’s sister, Sharon, was making for the wedding day as well as the food being prepped in the kitchen!

We knew the wedding day was going to be busy and wanted to take the time to really capture all the details Steph + Ryan had spent years putting together and were happy to be involved with the rehearsal.

    A Time to Groom

Thank you Josh, for sharing and making sure Ryan had everything he needed.  The guys got ready at Josh’s house and Ryan made himself at home, borrowing a tank top, new razor blades, shaving cream and even pocket squares!   After his shave Ryan boasted how his face felt like a baby’s bottom (cue Kramer from Seinfeld minus the hair!).

The guys dined on a luxurious feast of McDonalds while watching Starcraft replay videos on the laptop.  Wow.

After spending 2 years planning this day, Ryan was a perfectionist, including redressing after finding a small crease on his collar.

    A Bride to Be

Stephanie + Ryan by Infused Studios, Edmonton Wedding PhotographersSteph and her bridesmaids were up at 5:30am to start on their hair and make up, done by Janet and Elaine Hua.  While having hair extensions and rollers put in, Steph was active and helping her bridesmaids out.

The wedding was capping off an exciting week – bridesmaid Ashley was accepted into med school (congrats!).  Banking on having a good week all around, Ashley was keen to make bets with the other girls on if Ryan would cry and Steph’s mom wanted in.

Before Steph entered the church, both moms lit the tealights around the base of the aisle decorations, providing a beautifully warm ambiance.

Stephanie + Ryan by Infused Studios, Edmonton Wedding PhotographersPastor Damien gave a personal sermon, recapping how Steph + Ryan met for the guests.  During the vows, both bride and groom shared vows they had written for one another and tears glistened in their eyes as they spoke.  The newlyweds then treated guests to a duet; When God Made You.

After the wedding, it was time to kick up our heels… check back next week for Part II.
